Sydney Hydrotherapy Services
Hydrotherapy (also called Aquatic Physiotherapy) is water-based therapy in which Physiotherapists provide exercise, training and rehabilitation that takes place in the water.
This kind of therapy is used to address a wide range of problems because water is a more tolerable environment than land.
In most cases, we are asked about hydrotherapy to assist with
- Joint pain
- Flexibility
- Balance
- General movement
- Walking
- Post Joint Replacement rehabilitation
- Neurological Rehabilitation for Cerebral Palsy, Brain Injury, Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease
Hydrotherapy is a great therapy to help people develop capacity in an aquatic environment, which translates to better movement on land too.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy in Sydney
There are many benefits to Hydrotherapy. These include:
- Warm water increases blood flow to soothe joint stiffness and muscle pain
- Buoyancy can provide relief for weight-bearing areas or joints
- Viscosity of water provides resistance for muscle strengthening
- Promotes relaxation
- Water can be an excellent environment for balance retraining
Hydrotherapy can be fantastic for someone who is starting out with exercise, or in the early phases of rehabilitation because it allows for a gradual start before progressing to land-based exercise. Hydrotherapy is fun, engaging and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
Vista Healthcare helps people access their local pool or beach, which is great to be part of the community.

Starting Hydrotherapy with Vista Healthcare
To get started, contact Vista Healthcare to request our water-based therapies:
- Fill out an online referral form here, or
- Telephone us on 1300 306 037
We can discuss the details and arrange an initial appointment.
While Hydrotherapy is wonderful for many clients, our first appointment will involve a checklist to determine whether Hydrotherapy is an appropriate option. This checklist gives us an understanding of:
- Confidence and safety around water
- Swimming ability
- Continence issues
- Any fears or uncertainties about being in water
If Hydrotherapy is suitable, we will arrange to meet at the pool for a first session. Generally, the first Hydrotherapy appointment will involve the Physiotherapist also being in the pool with the client. The session will include exercises to establish current capabilities and limitations in order to measure and understand progress into the future.
For subsequent appointments, the Physiotherapist may or may not be in the water for each session. This will depend upon the client’s individual needs.
